This book is written for anybody who wants to learn more about Linux. It explains the inner mechanisms of Linux from process scheduling to memory management and file systems, and will tell you all you need to know about the structure of the kernel, the heart of the Linux operating system.

Slackware 3.1, released in July 1996, primarily used Linux kernel version 1.2.13.

While it was released shortly after the 2.0.x kernel series began, Patrick Volkerding (the creator of Slackware) chose to stick with the 1.2.13 kernel as the default because it was considered the stable, "tried and true" choice at the time. However, the distribution did include kernel 2.0.0 as an experimental option in the kernels/ directory for users who wanted to test the latest features.
