Curiosity Goes Deep

Looking out through the window of the Fendouzhe submersible (“奋斗者”号潜水器), Du Mengran knew she was seeing something unusual. Under the lights of the vessel (船), strange hairy worms swam slowly among red tube worms.

Du and her team were exploring the hadal zone—the ocean’s deepest part, over six kilometers down. At that moment, they were at the bottom of the Kuril-Kamchatka Trench (千岛-堪察加海沟) near Japan, more than nine kilometers under the sea. There, Du found the deepest ecosystem with living animals ever discovered. This fantastic finding placed her on the 2025 “Nature’s 10” list of top scientists.

“There is so much we don’t know about the deep sea,” Du said. “As a scientist, I want to see it for myself and feel what it’s like.”

Most life on Earth needs sunlight. However, the ecosystem Du discovered is different. That deep down, there’s almost no light. The living things get energy from chemicals in the seafloor. Before this, scientists thought deep-sea life only ate food that sank from above. Du’s work changed that idea.

Inside the Fendouzhe, the cabin (船舱) is only 1.8 meters wide—too small to stretch out (伸开) your legs. Many people would not want to stay in such a tight space for hours. But Du feels excited every time she gets in. She calls the submersible a “time machine” that opens doors to unknown worlds.
